Absenteeism due to mental disorders has increased, as has its impact on productivity and health. Work reinstatement involves different social subsystems, with frequent failed reinstatements. There are biopsychosocial and work-related factors that influence the success of the reinstatement process. To illustrate determining factors of success or failure, this report presents three cases of people with mental illness analyzed with a literature-based approach. Retrospective information from patients with mental illness during return to work is used. Gradient differentiators stand out, with a greater number of facilitating factors in the successful case and barriers in the unsuccessful case. The employing companies took divergent decisions in each case. An interaction of systemic factors was evident that could explain the observed outcomes.
